A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court of India, where it was sought that the students should be allowed to pursue a three-year law degree right after school.
Currently, the law courses are pursued right after school is of 5 years and the three-year course can be pursued only after graduation.
The PIL was filed by the BJP leader and Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, whereby directions were sought to the central government as well as the Bar Council of India for the formation of an expert committee that would be assessing the feasibility of such a scheme.
As per the plea, the 5-year duration is not proportional to the study of law as well as the same can put a lot of financial burden on the students.
A reference has been made to the late jurists, Fali S Nariman and Ram Jethmalani who started their advocacy careers by the age of 21.
Another prayer in the plea calls for the attention of the central government, the consortiums of national law universities, and the central government that a detailed roadmap be prepared to attract the best legal talent in the field.
